A fire broke out in a boarded-up, vacant house in Chilliwack late Friday night.
Members of the Chilliwack Fire Department were called out to the blaze in the 9500 block of Williams Street around 11:30 p.m. on June 21.
When crews arrived on scene, there were flames coming from the front windows of the residential building.
"Firefighters quickly established a water supply and took action to contain the blaze, successfully preventing it from spreading beyond the single structure. After a thorough search, crews confirmed that the building was unoccupied," Krista Minar, assistant fire chief stated in a press release the next morning.
There were multiple reports of explosions being heard and two people were seen fleeing the scene with canisters.
Approximately 30 firefighters from Halls 1, 4, 5, and 6 battled the blaze. In addition to the fire department, BC Hydro, FortisBC, and RCMP were also there. There were no injuries to the public or firefighters.
This is one of many fires recently in the downtown area. On Thursday, June 20, firefighters were first called to a blaze at Chilies Restaurant on Yale Road, and were then called to an apartment fire hours later just a few blocks away.
On Father's Day (June 16), a medical office building on Hodgins Avenue was damaged by fire.
A major blaze blaze happened earlier in the week in an industrial part of Chilliwack when a sawdust hopper caught fire at Visscher Lumber on Lickman Road on Wednesday, June 19.
The cause of the fire in the vacant house on Williams Street is currently under investigation by the RCMP with support from the Chilliwack Fire Department. Anyone with information regarding this fire is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
