Human remains were found Friday (Jan. 3) in a burned vehicle at Sumas Mountain Regional Park in Abbotsford.

A regional park in Abbotsford was shut down after human remains were found inside a burnt SUV in the area on Friday afternoon (Jan. 3).

Sgt. Paul Walker, media officer with the Abbotsford Police Department (APD), said a vehicle fire was reported at around 2:45 p.m. in Sumas Mountain Regional Park.

When officers arrived, they found that a red 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander had been set on fire along a forest service road.

Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service put out the blaze, and what were believed to be human remains were found inside the burnt vehicle, Walker said.

He said the APD's major crime unit is investigating and working with the BC Coroners Service to identify the individual.

Walker said the investigation is "complex" and is now being headed by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

As of Saturday, Jan. 4 at 1 p.m., Sumas Mountain Regional Park remained closed to the public as officers were still in the area gathering evidence.

Anyone with information about the incident who was in the Sumas Mountain area on Jan. 3 and saw a red 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander or who might have dashcam footage from the area is asked to call the IHIT infoline at 1-877-551-4448.
