Get ready to travel on two wheels with Go By Bike Week 2024 in Chilliwack starting on Sept. 23 for riders of all abilities.
Since local organizers launched the first Go By Bike Week campaign four years ago, the annual event has been "instrumental" in the growth of the Chilliwack cycling community, said Nikki Rekman, a member of Chilliwack’s Go By Bike steering committee.
"The week-long Go By Bike Week campaign, supported by local organizers at Cycle Chilliwack, works to promote and sustain a healthy and active cycling community that includes riders of all ages and abilities," Rekman said.
There are cycle-focused activities throughout the week Sept. 23-Oct. 6, ranging from neighbourhood rides, bike maintenance clinics with Vedder Mountain Bike Co., and a 'Celebration Station' on the Vedder Rotary Trail starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday Sept. 28, in partnership with Cycle Chilliwack and the City of Chilliwack.
The sustained success of Go By Bike Week in Chilliwack is a clear indication of a thriving cycling community.
“There are riders like Jen Bailey who have participated for the last 10 years and always look forward to it,” said local organizer Janice Balakshin. “But we also have so many joining for their first time."
Participants sign up online, pledging to cycle at least one kilometre, and log the distance cycled over the almost two-week campaign.
The Garrison Bike Bus rolls on in September for Watson students weather permitting, and falls within Go By Bike Week.
The kick-off for the fall Go By BikeWeek is Monday, Sept. 23, with a Community Engagement Meeting at the Sardis library at 6 p.m. at 5819 Tyson Road.
There are prizes to be won but folks must be registered for Go By Bike Week, and everyone that rides to the meeting gets an extra raffle ticket. Go to www.gobybikebc.ca/chilliwack to register.
