Grey smoke could be seen rising from the top of a house near downtown Chilliwack as firefighters arrived in the early hours of Thursday (June 6).

Chilliwack Fire Department crews quickly contained a small basement fire called in at about 2:30 a.m. from the 9800-block of Young Road, according to assistant fire chief Chris Wilson.

A total of 25 firefighters from Halls 1, 2, 4 and 6 were dispatched after smoke started rising from the chimney and eaves of the single family home.

"Crews quickly secured a water supply, entered the home and located a small fire in a room in the basement of the home," said Wilson.

An "offensive attack" by crews put out the fire.

"Due to the quick actions of the firefighters the blaze did not extend into the walls or basement ceiling of the home and was confined to the room."

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries

This fire is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department officials and the RCMP. Anyone with information about this fire is asked to call the RCMP at 604-792-4611 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.chilliwackcrimestoppers.ca
