UPDATE: Stolen truck explodes waking Chilliwack neighbourhood

Stolen truck went boom as it burst into flames in Barber Park alley, and was heard blocks away

A stolen truck burst into flames with explosions heard in an alley off Barber Park in the early hours of Monday morning (Sept. 16) in Chilliwack.

Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Carmen Kiener confirmed the pickup truck had been stolen.

"The truck was stolen and investigation could not garner any evidence or witnesses," Kiener said.

Residents reported hearing the truck alarm blaring in the alley off Barber Drive behind Berkeley Avenue before multiple explosions rocked the neighbourhood. The explosions were possibly caused by the tires popping, or from a tank mounted atop the stolen truck.

It was a white truck with a "BioCentral" logo visible involved in the incident, which is the name of the company that runs the Parr Road green depot.

Neighbours blocks away on Fairfield Island reported hearing an explosion at about 4:40 a.m.

Chilliwack Fire Department crews were on-scene within minutes of multiple people calling 911 to report the vehicle fire.

Fire crews connected hoses to water sources, and used fire retardant foam to quickly extinguish the flames that were shooting straight up into the sky, and threatening nearby hedges.

RCMP say the police file is # 2024-40853, which remains an open investigation.
