A 28-year-old man from Alberta has been charged after the semi-truck he was driving rolled on Highway 1 in Chilliwack, blocking all four lanes and shutting down the highway for nine hours.
The crash happened on Friday, Nov. 8 at 5:50 a.m., east of Annis Road in the S-curves.
An off-duty BC Highway Patrol member, who was the first officer on scene, helped provide key evidence leading to charges against the man.
The RCMP investigation concluded that the semi driver lost control in a westbound curve.
The semi-trailer flipped, coming to rest with its cab and trailer blocking all lanes of traffic. A compact car then collided with the debris in the westbound lane, but no injuries were reported.
Highway 1 was closed for most of the day.
"An off-duty BC Highway Patrol member, who was the first police officer on scene, made the scene safe, made important observations, guided his co-workers to the collision, and then left to get into his uniform before returning to the scene to help," Cpl. Michael McLaughlin stated in a press release on Nov. 13.
The driver was ticketed for driving "without due care and attention" under the Motor Vehicle Act, with a fine of $368 and six points against the driver’s licence.
