A byelection for one seat on the Chilliwack School District's board of education will take place on March 1.

The byelection will fill the seat left vacant when Heather Maahs was elected as MLA for Chilliwack North. The winner of the byelection will join the current six trustees for the remainder of this four-year term, which is slated to end in 2026.

To help potential candidates with the election process, the district is hosting a candidate information session. That session will take place at the school district office on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m. and will provide potential candidates with an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a school trustee.

Superintendent Rohan Arul-Pragasam and secretary treasurer Simone Sangster will facilitate the meeting, and board chair David Swankey will be available to answer questions about his experience as a trustee.

Nomination packages are now available, online or at Chilliwack City Hall.

The nomination period runs from 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24.

For further information on running for office or voting, visit the city’s website at chilliwack.com/elections

Voting will be open on March 1 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Advance voting opportunities will be available on Wednesday, Feb. 19 and 26 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mail ballots will also be available, from Feb. 4 to 27.

Candidates are invited to register for the information session via email to Amy Dhanjal at amy_dhanjal@sd33.bc.ca.
