Aging culvert on Prest had to be replaced ahead of future road-widening, says City of Chilliwack

Culvert replacement finished on Prest, said City of Chilliwack on Sept. 20, 2024.

A culvert replacement project that closed a section of Prest Road is wrapping up.

The north-south Prest Road was fully re-opened as of Friday (Sept. 20), according to City of Chilliwack.

"Minor cleanup and finishing work begins next week with single-lane alternating traffic starting on Monday, Sept. 23, between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

"The road will be fully open outside of these hours," the city notice said.

That means the road will be fully open over the weekend with the single-lane alternating traffic from Sept. 23-28 on Prest between Bailey Road and McGuire Road.

The aging culvert had to be replaced to accommodate future road-widening. The existing corrugated steel arch pipes had to be replaced with a concrete box culvert, and the work has to be done during the fisheries window.

Fish found in the ditch caused delays in this project. That aspect of the project is being addressed this year "to reduce the impact to traffic next year when this area undergoes further construction for road-widening," the notice added.
