Crews respond to 2nd vacant-house fire in a week in Chilliwack

Flames were coming from windows of boarded-up house on McNaught in early-morning fire

Another vacant home in Chilliwack caught fire, less than one week after the previous one.

Crews with the Chilliwack Fire Department were called to the 9500 block of McNaught Road around 3 a.m. on Friday, June 28. It was the second fire at a vacant house in the city within a week. The last one happened on Williams Street on June 21.

When firefighters arrived on scene at McNaught Road, flames were coming from the front windows of the boarded-up home.

"Firefighters established a water supply and quickly took action to contain the blaze, successfully preventing it from spreading beyond the single structure. After a thorough search, crews confirmed that the building was unoccupied," assistant fire chief Wade Meeres stated in a press release later that same morning.

Approximately 24 firefighters from Halls 1, 4, and 6 responded to the fire. RCMP and BC Hydro were also on scene.

There were no injuries to the public or firefighters.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the RCMP with support from the Chilliwack Fire Department. Anyone with information regarding this fire is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
