PHOTOS: Crews battle vacant house fire in downtown Chilliwack

Happened on First Avenue near Williams Street; road closed to traffic

The Chilliwack Fire Department was on-scene at a house fire late Saturday morning which is now under investigation by both fire and police officials.

Crews were called to the boarded-up house at about 11 a.m. on Nov. 30 in the 46000 block of First Avenue, just west of Williams Street.

"Firefighters responded from Halls 1 and 4 and on arrival, reported heavy smoke and flames venting from multiple areas of the structure," fire chief Andy Brown said in a Dec. 2 press release.

The location of the fire and the existing structural damage actually "hampered" firefighting efforts.

"An excavator was brought in to assist in safely accessing and extinguishing the fire," fire officials said.

First Avenue was shut down to traffic as firefighters battled the blaze, and crews were still at it more than three hours later dousing hot spots as they waited for the gas to be shut off to the home.

There were no civilian or firefighter injures, but the fire is under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department and RCMP.

If anyone has any information about this fire, they are asked to call the RCMP at 604-792-4611 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.upperfraservalleycrimestoppers.ca.
