A City of Chilliwack map shows the area along Chilliwack Lake Road where rock scaling is taking place. A small rockslide took place in the work zone on March 20, but in an area that had not been worked on yet, according to the city.

A small rockslide on Chilliwack Lake Road hit one vehicle Thursday evening (March 20), but nobody was injured according to Chilliwack RCMP.

The slide happened at about 8 p.m., just southeast of the Vedder Road roundabout. Debris fell in front of a vehicle, causing damage to it, and the road was closed for an hour and a half to allow for clean up.

The slide was in the area of some current scaling work being done on a rock bluff, the City of Chilliwack confirmed Friday morning. However, a city rep said, the area where the slide took place had not yet been worked on.

The slide took place after the rock-scaling crew had completed their work, and there are crews on scene again today to assess the situation.

"Emergency work is being done in the area to address the risk of a potential debris slide," the city said in an email to The Progress. "The rock scaler conducting the work has been working in sections and has not yet reached the area where the slide occurred. Crews met first thing this morning (March 21) and are creating a plan in consultation with a geotechnical engineer to ensure the safety of the area as they complete the necessary work."

The rock-scaling work began on March 18 and is expected to take until March 25. Crews have been in the area from 8 a.m. to 7 pm. to "perform urgent road maintenance works along Chilliwack Lake Road."

Roads are open, but closing intermittently for up to 20 minutes to all foot, bicycle and vehicle traffic.
