A home has been deemed uninhabitable following a fire in Chilliwack over the weekend.

The fire broke out in the home in the 5600 block of Tyson Road on Friday, Dec. 27 just after 8 p.m., according to a press release from the Chilliwack Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived to find an active fire on the top floor of the home, prompting a second alarm.

Krista Mina, assistant fire chief, said crews were able to minimize the damage to the home "due to the swift actions of bystanders who immediately alerted the fire department." However, the home was still deemed unihabitable, she added.

Crews from Halls 1, 3, 4 and 6 worked on the fire, and there were no injuries to the public or firefighters.

Minar said the house was unoccupied at the time, and no smoke alarms were sounding.

"This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of functional smoke alarms in ensuring safe evacuation during a fire," she said. "We urge everyone to regularly check their smoke alarms to enhance safety in such emergencies."

In addition to the fire crews, RCMP and BC Ambulance Service were on scene to offer support during the incident. The fire is currently under investigation by the Chilliwack Fire Department.
