Chilliwack baker Elise Taves will be starting up from scratch after an SUV crashed through her downtown bakery Tuesday (Dec. 10).

The Cake Savvy owner got the call in the early afternoon that a vehicle backed up and smashed into her bakery, located in Cascade Centre at 45966 Yale Road.

She said luckily nobody was in the busy commercial space at the time. In addition to using the space for her cake business, she rents it out to four other small businesses, and has one employee.

"When I got there, the fire trucks, police and ambulance were already there," she told The Chilliwack Progress. "But of course the most shocking thing was the car that was completely inside the front of my bakery. The damage is quite extensive."

She said they had electricians come right away to fix some dangerous wires, and Trevor McDonald, executive director of the Chilliwack Downtown Business Improvement Association helped to get the smashed-out windows boarded up quickly.

Taves doesn't know the extent of the damage to her equipment or stock, but she will not be operational for a while.

In the meantime, she said she has a lot of macaroons that were already made and are for sale at the Made You Look pop-up shop at the corner of Mill Street and Wellington Avenue.
