Five outdoor amenities in Chilliwack have been completed thanks to more than $1 million in provincial funding.

Two off-leash dog parks, two pump tracks and a multi-use game area will provide residents with more recreational opportunities, the City of Chilliwack stated in a press release.

The money came from the province’s BC Growing Communities Fund.

Approximately $500,000 went towards the construction of two pump tracks, $418,000 was for a game area at Jinkerson Park, and $170,000 supported the creation of two new off-leash dog areas.

Mayor Ken Popove said he’s “grateful” to the province for investing in these parks, and that the spaces “create new opportunities for residents to get outside and enjoy some fresh air in the community.”

“With access to stunning lakes, rivers and mountains, enjoying the outdoors has always been an important part of life for people living in Chilliwack,” said Kelli Paddon, MLA for Chilliwack-Kent. “These new projects are an exciting addition for our growing community and give people that live here more opportunities to get outside, connect with each other and even try something new.”

The pump tracks – one at Jinkerson Park and the other at Vedder Park – feature berms, open turns, and straights, as well as directional arrows and a flat entrance/exit area. They are designed for beginners to learn the fundamental techniques of riding a pump track, but can also be enjoyed by more advanced riders and younger riders using balance bikes.

Jinkerson is also home to a new off-leash dog park and a multi-use game area.

Each game area features a paved surface, basketball hoops, line markings, and large and small recessed nets to facilitate ball hockey or soccer.

There’s also a new area for pooches to run free at Fairfield Park. This one, along with the one at Jinkerson, both have separate areas for small dogs and large dogs.

“These park upgrades will make it easy for people of all ages and abilities – and their four-legged friends – to get outside and stay active in Chilliwack,” said Dan Coulter, MLA for Chilliwack.

The parks are located at:

  • Fairfield Park dog off-leash area (46219 Clare Ave.)
  • Jinkerson Park pump track, dog off-leash area, and multi-use game area (5869 Jinkerson Rd.)
  • Vedder Park pump track (45450 Petawawa Rd.)
