Local designers featured in Chilliwack on National Indigenous Peoples Day

Chillcouture: Shxwthit’awkw’ celebrated the designs of three different Indigenous designers, at the Shxwá:y Cultural Centre in Chilliwack, June 22.

The evening included work by Crystal Chapman, Lyn Kay and Nikki LaRock, worn by models who worked a catwalk set up in the hall. Guests were also treated to entertainment by Arnie Leon, Maddi K and Dion Weisbrod.

Kay has shown her work around the world, including Paris Fashion Week. She brought several models with her that have been trained for the catwalk. Crystal Chapman's work was modelled by her children, and her children's spouses and children. At the end of her show, she passed along a traditional cedar hat to her daughter.

LaRock's show featured her signature hats in particular, which she explained to the audience are each created on an individual basis for the person buying it.

The event was held on National Indigenous People's Day, and drew a record crowd to the hall of about 450 people.
