Modern dance explores sensuality, human form in Chilliwack show

Choreographer Marie Chouinard pushes boundaries in 'Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun' and 'Rite of Spring'

A contemporary dance performance by a Canadian choreographer known for pushing boundaries is coming to a Chilliwack stage.

Marie Chouinard – Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Rite of Spring will be at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Feb. 3.

The show features two pieces where Chouinard re-imagines iconic works of music.

Set to Claude Debussy’s 'Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,' Chouinard's interpretation of the 1894 score transforms a mythical narrative into a mesmerizing exploration of desire, sensuality, and the primal elegance of movement. The piece celebrates the human form, and captures the delicate balance between dream and reality.

Her second piece explores the 1913 ballet 'The Rite of Spring' by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Chouinard’s rendition channels its raw, untamed energy into a visual and physical spectacle. This work delves into themes of ritual, sacrifice, and collective human experience, rendered with a fiercely contemporary edge.

The dances include adult situations and partial nudity.

Both pieces showcase Chouinard’s signature style – a fusion of daring physicality, intricate choreography, and profound emotional depth.

The evening will start with a modern Black and White Affair, where people are invited to dress up in their finest black-and-white attire and listen to live music, see a lobby performance piece, and visit an art exhibit focusing on the human form.

Marie Chouinard – Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Rite of Spring, a performance in collaboration with the Vancouver PuSh Festival, is coming to the Chilliwack Cultural Centre on Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $49, with Patron Program discounts available, and can be purchased at the Centre Box Office, online at chilliwackculturalcentre.ca, or by calling 604-391-SHOW(7469).

NOTE: This show features adult material, situations and partial nudity, and may not be appropriate for all audiences.
