Indigenous culture will be front and centre at a new event coming to Chilliwack on National Indigenous People's Day, June 21.
Chillcouture: Shxwthit’awkw’ is being billed as a fashion, arts and music gala, held in the beautiful Shxwá:y Cultural Centre. It's the latest cultural event presented by Chillsounds, and is being supported by several local Indigenous and First Nations organizations.
Three local Indigenous fashion designers, Crystal Chapman, Lyn Kay and Nikki LaRock, will showcase some of their culturally significant designs, featured by 30 Indigenous models on the catwalk.
The evening includes musical performances by Arnie Leon, Maddi K and Dion Weisbrod, as well as an arts showcase, presenting local Indigenous Artists.
Maddi K is a Canadian, self-taught alt pop singer, songwriter and producer, who "creates a mould for the next generation, breaking free from conventional methods of thought and self-expression," according to her bio. "Through her genre bending music, she unveils the downfalls of our material world, while simultaneously preserving the vitality of her Indigenous lineage and journey through consciousness."
The food will be a selection of Indigenous offerings, as well.
Ts’elxwéyeqw Tribe is the main sponsor of the event, and both Ch’íyáqtel First Nation and Chilliwack Metis Association are among the sponsors.
Chillcouture: Shxwthit’awkw' starts at 6 p.m. on June 21, at the Shxwá:y Cultural Centre (44692-B Skway Rd.). Tickets are $30 and available at eventcreate.com/e/chillcouture.
