Banjo player, 1-man band and more coming to Chilliwack stage

Playing guitar, drums simultaneously Steve Hill will bring possibly 'loudest show yet' to Bozzini's, says artistic director

There will be four nights of original music packed into March at an intimate music venue in Chilliwack.

Steve Hill will be at Bozzini's on March 12, and artistic director Emmanuel Asprakis is calling it "perhaps our loudest show yet."

This year marks the 20th year that Bozzini’s has been bringing live music to its small upstairs lounge in Chilliwack.

Blues musician Steve Hill is a one-man band. He performs standing up while singing and playing guitar, his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats and with a drum stick fused to the head of his trusty guitar, and any other percussion within reach.

He has showcased his talents at some of Canada’s biggest music festivals including the Montreal Jazz Festival, Ottawa Blues Festival, Mont Tremblant International Blues Festival, Thunder Bay Blues Festival, Kitchener Blues Festival and more. His accolades include one Juno, a Memphis Blues Challenge award for best self-produced CD, and eight Maple Blues awards.

With 11 albums of original songs to his name, he has explored everything from rock, country, folk, and all kinds of music, while continuing to fuse it all with his first love, the blues.

The next night (March 13) rock-and-roll singer-songwriter Curtis Eller will return for the first time in 10 years.

“His first time here still stands out as one of the all-time highlights,” Asprakis said.

He started his career at the age of seven as a juggler and acrobat, but has since turned to the banjo because that’s where the money is. Eller has spent 30 years touring burlesque houses, beer halls, underground theatres, and punk-rock dives of North American, Europe, and Australia.

Making her return after two sold-out shows in 2024 is Miss Emily on March 24, playing original soul, blues and Americana music.

Having performed for 20 years, she has an innovative spirit and creative force born out of necessity, and her incomparable vocals are surpassed only by her electrifying, roof-rattling performances, according to her bio.

Among other awards, she was named the Maple Blues Female Vocalist of the Year in 2019, 2021 and 2023, and was nominated for the prestigious Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year in 2022.

A one-night concert celebration featuring a triple bill of Ryan McMahon, T. Nile and Andrew Christopher on March 1 was sold out at press time, but check with the venue in case seats come available.

Here's the March lineup at Bozzini's:

  • Ryan McMahon, T. Nile and Andrew Christopher on March 1 (sold out)
  • Steve Hill on Wednesday, March 12
  • Curtis Eller on Thursday, March 13
  • Miss Emily on Monday, March 24

All shows start at 8 p.m. and doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 to $34 and available at Bozzini’s or call 604-792-0744 to reserve by phone. For more, go to bozzinisrestaurant.ca.
