Artists of all skill levels wanted for anonymous art show in Chilliwack

Chilliwack Community Arts Council's 2nd annual Anonymous Art Show raises money for programming

Artists of all skill levels are being invited to take part in an art-show fundraiser made up of work from "unknown" artists.

The second annual Anonymous Art Show returns on June 6 after launching last year in Chilliwack.

Hosted by the Chilliwack Community Arts Council, it will showcase a collection of 150-plus pieces of artwork, each created by artists who remain anonymous until their piece is sold.

Not only does the event foster a strong sense of artistic community, but it also raises crucial funds to support local arts programming, said Lise Oakley executive director with the Chilliwack Community Arts Council.

"The Anonymous Art Show is a wonderful way for artists to gain exposure while contributing to the growth of the arts in Chilliwack," Oakley said. "It’s also a fantastic chance for new artists to step into test out their works and for seasoned creators to connect with fresh audiences."

Anyone aged 16 and older can take part, and people can submit up to three piece. It is open to all styles and approaches of art, including painting, drawing, mixed media and more.

People can pick up a blank eight-inch-by-eight-inch canvas from Cornerstone Custom Picture Framing and Gallery (9369 Mill St.) for $10, or they may use their own, if it meets the eight-inch-by-eight-inch size requirement. Canvases are available now until May 15, or until they sell out.

Artists are to sign their name on the back of the canvas, not the front. Once completed, work is to be dropped off at Cornerstone by May 15. Participants must also fill out the online application form at chilliwackartscouncil.com/anonymous-art-show.

The work is then put on display from June 6 to June 15 with the "buying night" fundraiser event taking place from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, June 6 at Cornerstone.

Each piece is auctioned off with a starting bid of $50. Fifty per cent of the revenue from each piece sold goes to the artist, and 50 per cent goes to the arts council to support local arts programming. Artist can choose to donate all revenue to the Chilliwack Community Arts Council.

Tickets to the fundraiser on June 6 are $20; those who submit work in the Anonymous Art Show get free entry.
