The second annual Loyalist Day in British Columbia was marked with due pomp and circumstance at a special flag-raising outside Chilliwack City Hall Monday morning.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz and MP Mark Strahl joined members of the Chilliwack branch of the United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada to raise the First Union flag at 9 a.m.

"The date of the July 22 was chosen by the B.C. UELAC Branches to commemorate the explorer Sir Alexander Mackenzie, who was the first European to cross North America north of Mexico," said Shirley Dargatz, branch president of the Chilliwack chapter of the UELAC.

It didn't hurt that the day also coincided with the royal birth, she added.
