The winner of the City of Chilliwack's 2012 Christmas Card contest designed a local wildlife scene in playful cartoon form.
Cathy Healey was in council chambers recently to accept a framed print of her winning drawing and a $250 cheque from Mayor Sharon Gaetz on behalf of Chilliwack council.
A family of festive Mallard ducks complete with Santa and elf hats are depicted crossing Vedder Road at the designated duck crossing with a colourful Christmas tree in tow.
Healey, the artist/illustrator, is a 20-year resident of Chilliwack, whose bio says she mainly sells her artwork at Vancouver area markets, online and across B.C.
"You were in among some pretty stiff competition," Mayor Sharon Gaetz told the artist at last Tuesday's council meeting. "There were some photos, pastels and oils. There were all kinds of beautiful cards."
This one depicts a recognizable local landmark — the duck crossing.
"It's for everyone who has driven down Vedder Road and seen our sign to watch out for the ducks. It makes everyone smile," said Gaetz.
The city staff voted on the design submissions and the winning card is now going out from Chilliwack council for the Christmas 2012 season.
Healey was given a framed print of the card, and $250 for her contribution.
