The annual Lions Pikeminnow Derby takes place on Father’s Day weekend in Chilliwack

Braydon Puffalt and his five-year-old daughter Lola caught more than one smallmouth bass during the Lions Pikeminnow Derby at Cultus Lake on Saturday.

The two were some of many taking part in the annual Father’s Day weekend family fishing event at Main Beach.

This year, organizers were asking people to fish for northern pikeminnow as well as smallmouth bass at the lake, both of which are invasive species.

“By entering the derby, you’ll be helping to control the population of pikeminnow, which is a predator of young sockeye and other fish in the lake,” said Robert Prinse, chair of the derby.
