The cast and crew of UFV Theatre’s Pariah (The Outcast) are preparing for the live-streamed Zoom production, which runs March 24 to 27.

The University of the Fraser Valley School of Creative Arts with UFV Theatre presents the second virtual production of their 2020-21 season from March 24 to 27.

Pariah (The Outcast) by August Strindberg is directed by UFV faculty member Parjad Sharifi.

The production tells a mysterious psychological story about an American traveller and an archeologist with contrasting moral beliefs, and their Darwinian battle of survival.

In this one-act play, the story escalates as dark criminal secrets are threatened to be revealed, and both characters create their own moralities in a Nietzschean conversation about justice and punishment. Strindberg was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe and heavily influenced by Nietzsche’s perspectivist ideas that truth is relative to one’s experiences and interpretations.

Pariah (The Outcast) will be live-streamed over Zoom.

“Our UFV Theatre production team is very passionate about keeping theatre alive during the pandemic, and the faculty and staff are working extremely hard to deliver the best possible student learning outcomes,” said director Parjad Sharifi.

“Since the work is interdisciplinary, we strive to include digital performance literature and film techniques to develop innovative ideas about online digital storytelling.”

Production designers are Heather Robertson (costume design) and Makayla Pollock (hair and makeup assistant, student), while Emylee Letourneau takes the role of stage manager. Actors include Ashy Pearl (Mrs. X) and Sarah Wack (Ms. Y).

The performances are free and take place at 7 p.m. on March 24, 25 and 26 and at 2 p.m. on March 27. Post-performance talks will occur after every show.
