Take a respite from the summer heat with a cool jazz series at Bozzini's upstairs lounge.

Two musicians will be entertaining folks every Thursday night for a couple of hours starting at 6:30 p.m.

Musicians Thomas Powell and Luan Phung both attend college but are home for the summer.

Powell started playing guitar when he was 11 years old, and became serious about it as a career after a school trip to the Lionel Hampton jazz festival in Idaho in grade 10. This is also where he discovered jazz music and his love for the art. Accepted into one of the leading music programs in Canada, Powell left for Toronto right after graduating high school to mature his artistic abilities and further his studies.

Currently, he leads a trio, and is playing duo with vocalist Ilsa Gurtins and duo guitar with classmate and friend Luan Phung – also from Chilliwack. Powell will be returning to Toronto in the fall to attend his second year of study at Humber College.

Luan Phung (born 1991 in London, England) is a Toronto based guitarist, composer, improviser, and recording artist.

Described as “oustanding” and “an impact player” who “raises the bar on so many levels” by acclaimed guitarist Geoff Young and Juno nominated David Occhipinti, Phung is noted for his intricate and mature compositional approach, as well as his rhythmically focused improvisational style. Currently a student at Humber College’s prestigious music program, Phung has studied with likes of Canadian jazz giants David Occhipinti, Geoff Young, Kirk MacDonald, Shannon Gunn, Al Kay and Jim Lewis. He has been recognized nationally for his musical excellence; winner of the Galaxie Rising Star award for jazz performance, winner of the CanFor scholarship, winner of the Ted Quinlan Guitar Award, chosen to play in TD Canada Trust High School Jazz Intensive and the Ottawa Youth Summit All-star Band, and a national finalist at the Canadian Music Competition, among others.

He has most recently been guest featured on the notorious Canadian hip-hop jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD’s second full length release, BBNG2. He currently leads a septet, a quartet, and trio featuring all original material.
