David Hobson says he always knew he wanted to start his own improv comedy group in Chilliwack. So after training at the Vancouver TheatreSports League, he put together a local group, SimPhoney Improv, about four years ago, which was honoured as Chilliwack’s Artist of the Month for April.

“I knew some friends who had stage and comedy experience and that formed the basis of the group we have now,” said Hobson.

“Improv comedy is entirely unscripted,” explained Hobson. “It’s very life like, and we put life into the scenes we’re doing: things going on in the news or seen on TV, whatever. The whole aspect is about providing fun for both the players and the audience.”

Performing publicly a few times a year, SimPhony Improv is hosting an interactive comedy show on Saturday, June 23, at the Cowork Chilliwack Theatre.

Titled Fools out for Summer, the show will be one full of side-gripping humour, says Hobson: “If you like to have a laugh, then you’ll love this show!”

“We have a series of sketches or games that we announce to the audience and get them to give us information,” explains Hobson. “Geographical information, relationship status, anything. Then we preform that—up until the time we begin speaking we have no idea what we’re going to be doing.”

The show starts at 7:00 p.m., and tickets are available for $13, which includes a refreshment, and can be purchased by emailing SimPhoney Improv at simphoneyimprov@gmail.com, on their Eventbrite listing, or at the door, however, seating is limited.
