Participants needed for Sto:lo performance project

People are invited to an info session for Grand Theft Terra Firma: Stories of (Re)conciliation this Saturday.

UFV Theatre and the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre are inviting people to attend an information session and workshop on Saturday for their performance project set to take the stage in April 2017.

Grand Theft Terra Firma: Stories of (Re)conciliation is a performance project that will explore how S’ólh Téméxw — the traditional and unceded lands of the Stó:lō (People of the River) — began being colonized in the mid-1800s and ask how that history is lived today, by people of both Indigenous and settler ancestry.

The performance will be devised (created by the performers involved) and will ask challenging questions about the ongoing legacies of colonialism in Canada and how healing and harmony between indigenous and non-indigenous people might be achieved. This project is a co-production between UFV Theatre, the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre, and the Reach Gallery in Abbotsford.

They are seeking individuals to collaborate in creating and performing this project. No acting experience or training is required, just an interest in performing and in exploring the questions the project seeks to address.

They are hosting an event Nov. 19 to provide more information about the project and a sample performance workshop. It is open to anyone – community members, UFV students, indigenous and non-indigenous peoples. Following each workshop, people can fill out an application to participate in the project.

Information sessions/workshops is Saturday, Nov. 19, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Sto:lo Research and Resource Management Centre (Building 10, 7201 Vedder Rd.)

No preparation is necessary, although interested participants are recommended to wear comfortable clothes that allow for movement. If you have questions or are interested in the project but cannot attend either of the workshops, please email heather.davisfisch@ufv.ca.

Performances for Grand Theft Terra Firma: Stories of (Re)conciliation take place April 6-9 and 20-23, 2017. Rehearsals will begin in January and will likely be scheduled on Saturdays and one weeknight/week.
