Oscar winner Juliette Binoche stars in 'Words and Pictures' as an artist and art teacher who struggles in love and with arthritis.

In Theatres: Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche in ‘Words and Pictures’

Also out this weekend: Eric Bana in 'Deliver Us From Evil' and an indie film called 'Gerontophilia'.

Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche go head-to-head, but probably fall in love, in Words and Pictures, a romantic comedy in theatres this weekend.

Owen and Binoche play professors of both literature and visual art, and they compete to inspire their students and prove which medium is, well, the best. Sort of like a Firemen vs Policemen thing.

“Clive Owen’s Jack is a grizzled and disgruntled star poet whose pen is now dry but whose cup never is,” writes Peter Holland, film critic for the Toronto Star. “His drinking and subsequent outbursts have him banned from his favourite pub and on waivers at Croydon, the New England prep school that charitably still employs him.

“She’s also an acclaimed artist, a painter of bold and colourful abstract canvases,” Holland writes of Binoche’s character. “But arthritis has robbed her of much of her mobility and all of her smile. She, too, is tired of her situation, but not so fatigued that she won’t engage Jack in argument.”

Kettle, meet boil.

Also in theatres, Eric Bana seeks out the demonic in Deliver Us From Evil, a film based off a book by a real-life New York City detective who traded in the badge for a career chasing the paranormal.

Olivia Munn, Edgar Ramirez, and Joel McHale also star.

Finally, Gerontophilia is in theatres – the story of a young man who has romantic affections for the elderly and develops a close bond with a patient named Melvyn Peabody.
