Chilliwack International Film Series returns for fall season

A hand-picked selection of films returns this fall with the Chilliwack International Film Series from Sept. 28 to Nov. 2, culminating in the special ShortFest night on Nov. 9.

Hosted by the Chilliwack Community Arts Council in partnership with the Toronto International Film Festival Circuit, the series features weekly screenings of six internationally acclaimed feature films at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas.

All films begin at 7 p.m. Cost is $6 per movie or $30 for a festival pass.

Here's the Chilliwack International Film Series lineup:

Sept. 28The Meddler: USA / 100 min / PG / Comedy, Drama, Romance. An aging widow from New York City follows her daughter to Los Angeles in hopes of starting a new life after her husband passes away. Directed by: Lorene Scafaria. Starring: Susan Sarandon, Rose Byrne, J.K. Simmons.

Oct. 5Dark Horse: UK / 85 min / G / Documentary, Drama. An inspirational true story of a group of friends from a working men's club who decide to take on the elite 'sport of kings' and breed themselves a racehorse. Directed by: Louise Osmond. Starring: Jan Vokes, Brian Vokes, Howard Davies.

Oct. 12The Man Who Knew Infinity: UK / 108 min / PG / Biography, Drama. The story of the life and academic career of the pioneer Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan, and his friendship with his mentor, Professor G.H. Hardy. Directed by: Matt Brown. Starring: Jeremy Irons, Dev Patel, Stephen Fry.

Oct. 19Genius: UK, USA / 104 min / PG / Biography, Drama. A chronicle of Max Perkins's time as the book editor at Scribner, where he oversaw works by Thomas Wolfe, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald and others. Directed by: Michael Grandage. Starring: Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, Colin Firth, Guy Pearce, Laura Linney.

Oct. 26Captain Fantastic: USA / 118 min / PG / Comedy, Drama, Romance. In the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent. Directed by: Matt Ross. Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Frank Langella, George MacKay, Kathryn Hahn.

Nov. 2The Dressmaker: Australia / 118 min / PG / Drama. A glamorous woman returns to her small town in rural Australia. With her sewing machine and haute couture style, she transforms the women and exacts sweet revenge on those who did her wrong. Directed by: Jocelyn Moorhouse. Starring: Kate Winslet, Judy Davis, Liam Hemsworth, Hugo Weaving.

Nov. 9 is ShortFest, a special night featuring an exclusive selection of short films from around the globe. Please note seating is limited.

New for this fall: Series passes are available for purchase online through chilliwackartscouncil.com as well as in-person at the Chilliwack Community Arts Council (20-5725 Vedder Rd.), The Book Man (45939 Wellington Ave.), and Cottonwood 4 Cinemas (45380 Luckakuck Way) for $30. Each series pass includes a bonus ShortFest pass for the Nov. 9 screening. Tickets for individual films and ShortFest can be purchased at Cottonwood 4 Cinemas for $6 per person on the day of each screening.

To celebrate another season of exceptional film, filmgoers are invited to an opening reception featuring a no-host bar and live music held prior to the screening on Sept. 28 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
