The 100th anniversary of jazz concert

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first jazz recording with an afternoon of traditional jazz on March 5.

The Creole Jazz Band will delight you with the joyous sounds of New Orleans, including tunes from the first jazz record, and the subsequent timeless melodies that still seem fresh today.

Special guests, The Curbside Trad Jazz band, will bring their youthful enthusiasm to the show as they entertain you with their take on traditional jazz.

The first jazz recording was issued on March 07, 1917. It was recorded on the Victor label in New York on Feb. 26, 1917. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band has the fame of being the band that was on that first recording. It sold more than one million copies.

The two tunes on the recording, 'Dixieland Jazz Band One Step' and 'Livery Stable Blues' have become staples in the traditional jazz repertoire. One would think that in light of the success of the first jazz recording that there must have been a race to get the first record out. In fact it was quite the opposite. The Original Dixieland Jazz Band first recorded with Columbia Graphophone Company. The session took place on Jan. 31, 1917. Nothing from this test session was issued.

The band then recorded two sides for the Victor Talking Machine Company, 'Livery Stable Blues' and 'Dixie Jass Band One Step', on Feb. 26, 1917, for the Victor label.

The idea of one artist covering the hit of another artist was seen very soon after the release of the 'Dixieland Jazz Band One Step'. W.C. Handy recorded one of the earliest cover versions of 'Livery Stable Blues' by Columbia Records on Sept. 25, 1917.

The 100th anniversary of jazz concert, featuring the Creole Jazz Band, takes place Sunday, March 5 at Christ Lutheran Church (9460 Charles St.). Doors open at 1 p.m., concert is at 2 p.m.
