Upcoming Events:

How I Make Money in Mutual Funds: Local Author Brad Geary will speak about his book, After the Haircut, written in story form and set at Cultus Lake. He'll be at the Yarrow Library on Thursday, March 6 from 6:45 to 8 p.m. His book details an easy system for investing in mutual funds or exchange traded funds. The presentation will be geared towards any level of investor where participants will be shown a step-by-step system for investment. It will be especially helpful for new investors or those who have invested in mutual funds in the past but are unhappy with their returns. Zinio Magazine Collection: Never miss an issue of your favourite magazine. At the Chilliwack library on Friday, March 7, learn how to download complete digital editions of the magazines you love 24/7 to your home computer and mobile device. The home computer session runs noon to 1:30 p.m., and the smart device/tablet session is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Registration required.

The Beauty of Bali: From ancient temples and traditional rice fields to white sandy beaches and the most beautiful smiles, Bali has it all. Michele Dekok lives in Hope, but maintains a home in Ubud, Bali. She spends part of each year there, holidaying and working with local charities. Learn about tourist attractions and the day to day of ordinary Balinese people at the Chilliwack Library on Wednesday, March 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Quilters Guild Open House: Talented Chilliwack residents proudly display their works of quilted art at the Sardis Library on Thursday, March 13 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Book Sale Blitz: The Friends of the Chilliwack Library invite you to their Book Sale Blitz at the Chilliwack Library on Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All books are $5 a bag (bag provided).

Spring Break Scavenger Hunt: Visit the Sardis Library for some spring break scavenger hunt fun. Read the clues to follow the map and remember X marks the spot. Participants may enter to win the treasure. The event runs March 17 to 21 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Crafternoon for Teens: Try your hand at cake pop decorating at the Sardis Library on Tuesday, March 18 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Enjoy an hour of chocolate dipping and icing piping while you make your own edible craft to take home. For ages 12 and up.

The One Eyed Troll: An evil one-eyed troll has taken over the forest. Everyone is terrified, but a young boy out looking for some firewood just might have a solution. Join the Trollsons (Thursday, March 20 at the Sardis Library from 11 to 11:45 a.m.) as they use comedy, improvisation, and audience participation to bring this Scandinavian tale to life. Suitable for ages 5 to 12.

The Selkie: A fisherman watches in awe as a seal removes her seal-coat to transform into a beautiful, mysterious woman. He falls instantly in love, and decides that she will be his wife. Join the Trollsons (Thursday, March 20 at the Chilliwack Library from 2 to 2:45 p.m.) as they use comedy, improvisation, and audience participation to bring this Irish tale to life. Suitable for ages 5 to 12.

A Day in the Life of a Wildlife Rehabilitator: Find out about the life-saving work that takes place at Wildlife Rescue. Learn about local wildlife and what you can do to help the animals around us. Through an interactive virtual tour, participants enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at our wildlife hospital and the animals we've recently treated. Students learn how to identify local wildlife and the simple steps they can take to support the animals in their neighbourhood. Takes place at the Chilliwack Library, Friday, March 21 from 11 a.m. to noon.

 

Ongoing and Current Programs:

LEGO Club: We have the LEGO, you bring your imagination! LEGO club takes place at the Sardis Library on Tuesday, March 25 and April 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. It's a fun time for kids ages 7 to 14, so come on in and join them after school. (Psst - girls are welcome!) Please note that registration is required by calling 604-858-5503.

Spring Book Bingo: Take part in the spring Book Bingo contest at the Chilliwack Library, which runs from Feb. 1 to April 30. Pick up your bingo sheet from the Chilliwack Library and put an X through each completed library activity. For each completed row (up, down or diagonal), show your bingo card at the information desk for a chance to win one of several great prizes! Prize draws will be held on May 1.

Storytime: Introduce kids to the love of books and language with Storytime! Children and caregivers will enjoy interactive stories, songs, rhymes, and more. Storytime prepares children to learn to read. Takes place at the Chilliwack Library every Tuesday (Feb. 4 to April 29) from 10:30 to 11 a.m., at the Yarrow Library (March 4 and 25, April 1, 15, and 29, and May 6) from 10:30 to 11 a.m., and at the Sardis Library on Mondays from 10:30 to 11 a.m. (excluding March 17 and April 21).

Knit and Knatter: Pack up your yarn and head to the library! Knitting is fun, relaxing and a great way to connect across the generations. Join knitters of all ages and abilities at the Sardis Library on Wednesdays  from noon to 1:30 p.m. for their warm and welcoming drop-in knitting group. Children and beginners are welcome.

Mental Silence Meditation: Mental silence is the experience of inner silence which brings a peaceful and clearer awareness. It is easy to learn, and with the guidance of Sergiy Fadyeyev, can generate significant results quickly. Mental silence can reduce stress and have a profound balancing effect on physical, mental and emotional dimensions of the students, enhancing both resilience and total well being. This program takes place at the Sardis Library on Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m. (excluding April 21).

eHelp Desk: Visit Chilliwack Library’s Monday afternoon eHelp Desk for one-on-one help with downloading FVRL’s Ditigal Content (eBooks, audiobooks and magazines) and accessing FVRL’s other digital databases. The eHelp Desk program takes place Mondays at the Chilliwack Library from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

Book Clubs: Join library staff for lively discussions of selected titles. Chosen books will change monthly and copies are provided by the library. New members are welcome to join at any time, and registration is not required for this free program. The Chilliwack Library Book Club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Yarrow Library Book Club meets on the third Thursday of the month from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.

Friends of the Chilliwack Library: This volunteer organization supports the library through advocacy, fundraising and assistance with various projects and programs. The Puzzle Sale, Pet Parade and Quiz Night are all successful Friends initiatives. They meet on the first Wednesday of the month at the Chilliwack Library from 2 to 3 p.m. New friends are always welcome.

Teen Games Night: Teens and pre-teens can join Susan and Raymond on the second Thursday of the month for a great evening of board and card games including Apples to Apples, Escalation, Zombie Brains and more. Games Night takes place at the Chilliwack Library from 5 to 8:30 p.m. For more information, email Susan at sjbarclay@telus.net.

Genshiken: Join Raymond and his Genshiken group for a night of Japanese pop culture mayhem. It takes place on the third Wednesday of the month at the Chilliwack Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Due to the content of the media during the Japanese group, please be at least 13 to attend. Rated T for Teen: With Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Rock Band, Wii Sports, Animal Crossing, retro-gaming on the Dreamcast, and the One Quarter Challenge, you bring your 'A' game and we bring the rest. Bring your Nintendo DS for portable multiplayer mayhem. This program takes place on the fourth Saturday of the month at the Chilliwack Library from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. For more information, email Raymond at raynichols@telus.net, or call 604-793-7238 or search for "Rated T for Teen" on Facebook to join our group and get updates.

Conversation Circles: Are you an adult trying to improve your spoken English? Would you like to meet new friends in the community? Your local libraries, in partnership with Chilliwack Community Services (604-393-3251), hosts free Conversation Circles. The events take place: Mondays at the Chilliwack Library (until April 28) from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and Wednesdays at the Sardis Library (until April 30) from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

 

Upcoming Programs:

Babytime: Make language fun! Start early with Babytime at the Chilliwack Library on Thursdays (April 3 to 24 from 10:30 to 11 a.m.). Help your baby develop speech and language skills - enjoy bouncing, singing and rhyming with stories. Babytime is a fun, social bonding activity for babies and caregivers. Registration begins March 15.
