What's happening at the Chilliwack and Yarrow libraries

A list of upcoming and ongoing library events at the Chilliwack and Yarrow libraries for the month of April and beyond.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

April 8 - Healthy Eating for Seniors is a seminar offered at the Chilliwack Library from 2-3:30 p.m. Canada’s revised Food Guide provides the basis for this health promotion workshop presented by the Council of Senior Citizens’ Organizations of B.C. Learn how to use food label information while grocery shopping and other strategies for healthy living.

April 13 - Two local award-winning authors, Annie Daylon and Michael Hiebert, will launch books in an open house style event on Saturday, April 13 from 1-4 p.m. at the Chilliwack Library.

April 20 - Wellness for Life: Eating for Health and Wellness is at the Yarrow Library on Saturday, April 20 from 1-2 p.m. Rediscover food the way nature intended. Reclaim your health and vitality by eating nutritious whole foods. This workshop focuses on basic food groups, label reading, meal planning, shopping and stocking, etc., all from a holistic, whole-food perspective. Also learn about special diets including gluten-free, wheat sensitivities and lactose free diets.

April 24 - Author John Vaillant will be at the Chilliwack Library on Wednesday, April 24 from 1-8:30 p.m. Having spent several years living in a tiny, remote cabin in Alaska, award-winning Canadian author and journalist John Vaillant knows the wilderness of which he writes. Inspired by environmental issues and tales of resilience, he has produced two outstanding works of non-fiction. Join him for a memorable evening of literary discussion, commentary, and slides as he discusses the history, ecology, and political intrigue behind his most recent work The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival. Book clubs in the community are encouraged to mark this special evening on their calendars. Please arrive early as seating is limited to 50. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the Chilliwack Library.

April 26 - The Yarrow Library presents documentary film Finding Wellness: Forks Over Knives from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The movie examines the controversial suggestion that many diseases afflicting humans can be controlled or reversed by changing our diet from animal-based and processed foods to one that includes more plant foods. Yarrow Library is pleased to host a screening of this movies that uses state-of-the-art 3D graphics and rare archival footage, as well as documentary filming. Forks Over Knives was filmed all over the United States, and in Canada and China. It interviews leading experts on health and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that will get us thinking.

 

ONGOING EVENTS:

It's Babytime at the Chilliwack Library on Thursdays (now to April 25) from 10:30-11 a.m. This event is an infant-focused introduction to children’s stories, songs, rhymes and rhythm, designed especially for babies (newborn to one year old) and their caregivers. Registration required.

The Yarrow Library Book Club meets every third Thursday of the month (6:30 to 7:45 p.m.) to discuss the books they've read at the Yarrow Library. Join the staff for lively discussions of selected titles. Chosen books will change monthly and copies are provided by library. New members are welcome to join at any time. Registration is not required for this free program. 604-823-4664

It's Games Night at the Chilliwack Library on the second Thursday of the month from 5-8:30 p.m. (now to April 11). Join for a great evening of board and card games including Apples to Apples, Escalation, Zombie Brains and more. For more information, email Susan at sjbarclay@telus.net.

'How's That Made?' is for kids in Grades 5 and up, and runs Tuesdays at the Yarrow Library from 4 to 5:30 p.m. (now to April 30). It's Family Storytime at the Chilliwack Library on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. (now to April 24). Enjoy a half hour of stories, songs, finger plays and flannel tales.

The Chilliwack Library Book Club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 7-8 p.m. (now to May 22). Join librarian Jennifer Douglas for lively discussions of selected titles. Chosen books change monthly with copies provided by the library. New members are welcome to join at any time.

Are you an adult trying to improve your spoken English? Would you like to meet new friends in the community? Yarrow Library, in partnership with Chilliwack Community Services (604-393-3251), is hosting a free Conversation Circle on Thursdays at the Yarrow Library (now to April 25). It's Family Storytime at the Yarrow Library on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. (now to May 7). Drop in for a half hour interactive program of stories, songs, rhymes, and puppets. This program is suitable for ages 2-5 years. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to participate.

Join Raymond and his Genshiken group for a night of Japanese pop culture mayhem. Genshiken takes place the third Wednesday of the month at the Chilliwack Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (now to April 17). Due to the content of the media during the Japanese group, please be at least 13 to attend.

Are you an adult trying to improve your spoken English? Chilliwack Library, in partnership with Chilliwack Community Services (604-393-3251), is hosting a free Conversation Circle on Mondays at the Chilliwack Library from 7 to 8:30 p.m. (now to June 17).

Pyjama Storytime takes place every Tuesday from 7-7:30 p.m. (Feb. 26 to Mar. 19) at the Chilliwack Library. Wear your pyjamas and snuggle your favourite stuffy while listening to stories at the library.

Homeschooling families are invited to monthly sessions with outreach librarian, Jacque Garden, every Thursday at the Yarrow Library from 10 to 11 a.m. (Jan. 24 to April 25). Jacque will be conducting information sessions to help meet your educational and literacy needs.
