Terry Horne carves Sto:lo welcome figures for Chilliwack Visitor Centre

Chilliwack carver Terry Horne is making two 18-feet-tall welcome figures out of cedar

Chilliwack carver, Terry Horne (above), chips away at one of the two 18-feet-tall welcome figures outside the Chilliwack Visitor Centre as a class from Cheam elementary watches on Wednesday.

“The goal of this project is to foster relationships between the Stó:lō and other members of the community, beginning at a young age. By installing hand-carved Stó:lō welcome figures at the Visitor Centre, we will be able to represent the importance of the Stó:lō to both our community and the visitors who come by our centre,” said Allison Colthorp, Tourism Chilliwack executive director.

The two figures, one man and one woman, will stand with their hands raised in a gesture of welcome. The project is expected to be completed by the end of July.
