They took the plunge in memory of one of Chilliwack's own.

Chilliwack city council took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Tuesday at city hall Tuesday with the help of a front-end loader.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz was the first to rise to the challenge, gamely dousing herself with a single blue bucket of ice water after the council meeting, in memory of the late Peter Wheeler who struggled with ALS, with family in attendance.

The mayor was also joined by Coun. Ken Huttema, Coun. Sue Attrill, Coun. Ken Popove, Coun. Stewart McLean, Coun. Chuck Stam, and her husband, Jim Gaetz, for a second bucket challenge.

"I do want to say this is such a serious thing for City of Chilliwack," Gaetz said in council chambers, and they wanted to show support for his family since it is coming up to anniversary of the passing of Peter Wheeler, an Agassiz resident, paramedic and father who died at the too-young age of 51.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – ALS, sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease- is a progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die. Here is the link to donate:
