Scaring people for a good cause in Chilliwack

Jeannie's Haunted House is not for the faint of heart.

Severed heads dangle from above, clowns with weapons lurk around the corner, and people will jump out at you when you least expect it.

For the five years she's been living in Promontory Heights, Jeannie Savard has been scaring children and adults with her Halloween display.

During the month of October, Savard transforms the outside — and this year even part of the inside — of her home into a creepy, crawly haunted house.

This year, her display has doubled in size compared to last year's. It begins with her front yard, continues along the side of her house and into the back yard, up onto the back porch, then into her house, through her kitchen and out the front door.

There are cobwebs and gravestones, blood and monsters, things with glowing eyes and things that move. She has life-sized dummies in costumes and real people dressed up — and it's hard to tell which is which until the real ones move.

In addition to last year's pirate ship, mad science lab, cemetery, and circus of horrors, there's the new eerie zombie nursery, hunted jack-o-lantern and monster who eats people.

Savard has always been a fan of Halloween, ever since she was a little girl.

"I love it. It's my passion. It's the best time of the year for me," she says. "I love scaring the kids. They're scared, but also delighted to see what I've done."

"I also love scaring the adults," she says with a laugh.

And Jeannie's Haunted House isn't just here to scare the poop out of people, it's also to raise money.

Like last year, Savard is collecting donations for the Chilliwack branch of the SPCA. In 2011 her goal was to raise $500, and she surpassed that. This year, she's aiming to raise $1,000. People can either donate money or canned pet food for the SPCA when they stop by her haunted house.

Check out Jeannie's Haunted House at 5379 Westwood Dr. in Promontory on Friday, Oct. 26 and Saturday, Oct. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m., and on Halloween night from 5 to 9 p.m.
