Thousands of people have gathered this weekend to take part in the powwow open to the public

Thousands of people have gathered for the Spirit of the People Powwow at Chilliwack secondary this weekend.

The first grand entry of the powwow, which took place at 1 p.m. Saturday, kicked off the dancing and celebrations at the cultural event.

There’s a specific order in which people and symbols come in to the grand entry. First the eagle staffs are brought in, followed by the flags. Veterans proceed next, followed by royalty, chiefs, elders, adults, teens and children.

People from across B.C., Alberta and Washington State came together for the free powwow which is open to the public all day today (Saturday) and Sunday.
