PHOTOS: Hope residents remember Prince Philip, royal visits to Fraser Valley

Prince Phillip died at age 99 at Windsor Castle on April 9

Prince Philip is remembered fondly in Hope following his passing on April 9.

Peter Scherle took to Facebook on Friday, posting a photo from 1958 of his father, then-village chairman Paul Scherle, seen speaking with Queen Elizabeth II with Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, at her side.

“This was a very special occasion for mom as my mother’s family immigrated from England to Ontario,” Scherle wrote. “The bouquet of yellow roses the Queen is holding was designed by mom and presented by Holly (Rolufs) Smith.”

Local historians also unearthed a photo from Walter Inouye taken seven years earlier, when the royal couple came to the Hope Station during their Royal Tour of Canada in 1951.

Prince Philip spent a month in hospital before being released mid-March. He passed away at Windsor Castle at the age of 99. His legacy includes heading up hundreds of charities and fulfilling more than 20,000 royal engagements.
