Chilliwack Shred-A-Thon brings in $13,700 in cash, food donations

City's document-shredding event brought in food and money for Chilliwack Salvation Army food bank

It may have poured rain on the weekend, but an outdoor document-shredding fundraiser for the food bank was a success, according to organizers.

Volunteers gathered for the bi-annual Shred-A-Thon on Dec. 7, a by-donation event where folks dropped off documents to be destroyed and, in return for the service, handed over cash or non-perishable food for the Salvation Army.

"Saturday was an amazing day, despite the weather," said Warren Schatz with the Salvation Army.

That day, a total of 1,600 pounds of food was donated (value of $5,632), and $8,096 in cash donations came in.

"There were 312 vehicles that dropped off materials and 15,600 pounds of documents shredded during this event," said Emterra operations manager Wayne Salmon.

It was a drive-thru event in the parking lot of the Chilliwack Coliseum and people were welcome to stay and watch as documents were shredded.

The event takes place twice a year, in June and in December, and is a collaboration between the City of Chilliwack, Emterra Environmental, the Chilliwack Salvation Army, and Shred-it.

"With the $8,096 donated for this event, this brings the total amount of cash donations to $68,548 since 2010," Salmon added.
