Apple Day, an annual Scouts Canada event, is back in Chilliwack after a four-year absence.

For the first time since 2019, two local scouting groups – 6th Chilliwack and 1st Fairfield – are ready to hand out free apples on Oct. 14 and 15 at five different locations around Chilliwack.

“Apple Day is a scouting tradition which goes back more than 90 years where Scouts give out apples to show appreciation for the support the community has shown us during the year,” said scouter Bruce Moores with 1st Fairfield.

Not to be confused with Scouts, scouters are the registered adults who volunteer their time with the young Scouts.

“Our youth distribute apples as a way of saying ‘thank you’ to the community. Donations are accepted in exchange, but apples are not sold,” said scouter Pierre Richez with 6th Chilliwack.

Together, the two groups will be handing out 700 pounds of apples over two days.

“All donations stay with the local group to help provide a quality and affordable program through equipment purchases, outdoor activities and trips, giving the youth unique experiences, skills and memories to last a lifetime,” Moores said.

People will see Scouts of all ages at Apple Day, from little five-year-old Beaver Scouts right up to the teenage Venturer Scouts and possibly even the eldest Scouts called Rovers.

Apple Day began in Saint John, N.B. in 1932, as a way to say thank you to the community. Since then it has become a fall tradition and a fundraising staple for many scouting groups in Canada. It is traditionally held on the first weekend in October.
