Chilliwack Rotary club feast fundraiser brings in thousands for wildfire victims

After Hours Club handed over thousands of dollars to Red Cross following pig roast event

A Chilliwack Rotary club recently donated thousands of dollars to help B.C. wildfire victims.

Rotary Club of Chilliwack After Hours (Chilliwack’s smallest club) handed over more than $5,000 to the Red Cross following a pig roast fundraiser this summer.

The event was organized by After Hours member Lara Clayton who owns a cabin on Harrison Lake. She, along with cabin neighbour Tom Mennen, were the ones behind the fundraiser.

The pig roast (with entertainment) was actually an auction item up for bids during a recent fundraiser by Mt. Cheam Rotary Club. Clayton and Mennen bid on the item and won.

The two then organized a date and place for the pig roast event which was held on Aug. 7 at Mennen’s cabin on Harrison Lake. The feast was open to all cabin members.

After Hours members helped by serving the meal, and Old Settler Pub donated additional chickens to roast due to the popular turnout.

The club brought in $5,255 from the by-donation event. That was matched by both the provincial and federal governments making the After Hours Club contribution to the Red Cross in excess of $15,000.

The club has plans to soon meet in person back at the Chilliwack Curling Club on the first and third Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Plans are also underway to raise money through blueberry and meat pie sales in October.
