People can come dressed up as their favourite character from a book during an upcoming literacy fundraiser in Chilliwack.
The Chilliwack Learning Society, a non-profit organization, is hosting A Novel Night to Remember on Oct. 5 – its only fundraiser event of the year.
Organizers are calling it an "enchanting evening" of food, bidding and music, all in support of literacy programs in the community. The event will feature a silent auction, 50/50 draw, special appearance by the Chilliwack Players Guild, and live jazz music by Xchange Rate.
Money raised goes towards programs such as: supporting newcomers who are improving their English, helping seniors as they learn to use their digital devices, reading with children, and a youth journalling project (currently in the pilot phase).
"The two latter programs, titled Bookworm Friends and Ink and Imagination, don’t have ongoing funding so fundraising and donations to these programs are important," said Annette Williams with the society.
"We’re small but our work positively affects many," she added. "In 2023, 940 individuals benefited from our programs and public events, and 70 volunteers found rewarding community involvement."
People can either attend A Novel Night to Remember as they are, or come dressed in costume as their favourite book character.
