Google change will favour mobile-optimized websites

A recent Google decision to change its algorithm means mobile-friendly websites are now vital for companies that use the web to attract customers, according to Bill Barnes, president of Mobile Marketing Solutions Inc.

In an unprecedented move, Google announced that it would be tweaking its algorithm on April 21 to favour mobile-friendly websites for those using the search engine on their phones.

That means that companies who rely on search results to bring in customers could see "a dramatic drop in business and calls" if they don't have a site Google deems mobile friendly, said Barnes.

Black Press has partnered With Mobile Marketing Solutions Inc. to offer GoMobile, a service that allows companies to optimize their sites for mobile by putting key clickable items (hours, map and contact number) at the forefront. Content on mobile-optimized websites is arranged to fit on a smartphone's screen with links spread out and easily activated, rather than clustered and hard to differentiate.

Google's move comes at the same time as surveys show increasing numbers of people are using mobile devices to access the internet.

"We're kind of at the tipping point where people are using mobile more than other means," Barnes said.
