In 16 years, Unity Christian has won several Fraser Valley banners in 1A senior basketball and soccer, but never in volleyball.

That changed last week as the Flames captured the senior girls’ championship.

Unity Christian downed their arch-rivals from Credo Christian in the Fraser Valley semi-finals, then stunned perennial powerhouse White Rock Christian in the final. The Flames took a straight sets victory by scores of 25-13, 26-24 and 25.23, led by Kirsten Kampman.

The Grade 11 standout earned tournament MVP honours while Grade 11 Grace Vandenbrink and Grade 9 Kylie Kampman earned all-star status.

Kirsten, a multi-sport star, was also named MVP of Fraser Valley basketball playoffs last February.

The Unity Christian girls head to Fernie next week to compete in 1A provincial championships. Coached by Laura Kampman and Lisa Smiens, they are considered contenders for a medal.

The school has previously won silver and bronze at provincial basketball tournaments, but no Flames team has ever grabbed gold in any sport.
