The University of the Fraser Valley men’s basketball team literally went big with their latest signing.

The club announced the inking of 6-10 centre Malcolm Tyler last week and the Langley product will join the Cascades in the fall.

Tyler played high school basketball at Langley’s Brookswood Secondary and averaged a double-double. He played his club basketball with Vancouver Sports Club and 3D Basketball Academy.

“Malcolm is a highly skilled big man,” stated UFV head coach Joe Enevoldson. “A big man in the truest sense, he likes to play back to the basket. He can square up and shoot, but his bread and butter is his footwork in the post.”

Enevoldson believes that Tyler will be able to fit in well in Canada West play due to his physicality.

“I chose UFV because of the opportunity to play with a great young core of players and be a part of the culture they’re establishing here,” said Tyler. It’s definitely a program on the rise.”

“I feel like this team will be uber-competitive, and I want to be a part of it. The opportunity to play close to home, in front of my family and friends, is pretty awesome as well.”

Tyler added that he respects the way that UFV has been able to grow and develop bigger players in recent years. Chilliwack’s Matthias Klim has turned into a reliable big man for the Cascades in the past two seasons.

He joins a Cascades team that finished 8-12 in CW regular season play, good for 12th overall. The team defeated the Regina Cougars in the play-in game, but then fell to the Winnipeg Wesmen in the postseason.
