Giants kick off season with ChilliBowl

Players, parents and volunteers will descend on Townsend park this weekend as Chilliwack Minor football hosts the ChilliBowl Tournament.

Hundreds of players, parents, visitors and volunteers will descend on Townsend park this weekend as Chilliwack Minor football hosts the 4th annual ChilliBowl  Tournament.

Games begin on Friday night when the Chilliwack Peewee Blue face Chilliwack Peewee Red at 7 p.m. and Chilliwack JB Blue battle JB Red at 7:30.

“Two Chilliwack teams playing each other is always a great match up and fun to watch as past teammates come head to head,” said Wayne Bjorge, president of Chilliwack Minor Football.

The games continue Saturday when peewee and junior bantam teams from Chilliwack, Mission, Surrey, Abbotsford and Kelowna square off.  The peewee games start at 9 a.m. and junior bantam games kick off at 2 p.m.  Chilliwack Giants Midget team will face the Nanaimo Redmen under the lights at 7 p.m.

The tournament continues on Sunday with another full day of games as the Atom teams kick off at 8 a.m.  Chilliwack Giants Bantam team will take on the North Surrey Panthers beginning at 2 p.m.

Teams have spent the last eight to 10 weeks practising and for most of the teams, this will be their first game.

“It’s great to see all their hard work come together and watch these players start to really mesh as a team”, says Mike Derksen, this year’s coordinator for the ChilliBowl.  New this year, will be a flag tournament on Townsend B and C on Saturday morning with several teams of 6 and 7 year olds from across the Lower Mainland
