Paul Filippi pounds the pavement in last weekend’s Cultus Lake Triathlon, each step taking him closer to a provincial title in the men’s sprint-distance 65-69 men’s division.

The weather cooperated nicely last Sunday as Dynamic Race Events hosted the 12th annual Cultus Lake Triathlon.

A total of 697 athletes competed in sprint, standard, half-iron, aquabike and standard relay distances.

Sprint distance competitors were gunning for a provincial championship, and three locals finished atop their age groups.

Paul Filippi finished first in the men’s 65-69 year old group while Deb Drozda took the title in the women’s 45-49 division.

Daniel Zemora was fastest in the men’s 20-24 division.

Meanwhile, the standard race was a national qualifier for worlds, which will be held next May in Spain.

Locals Michel Corno qualified with a first place finish in the men’s 60-64 group while Anthony Toth took top spot in the men’s 35-39 division.

Angela Froese (women’s 40-44) and Bruce Gerry (men’s 55-59) were first place finishers in the half-iron.

The Abbotsford Tri Club supplied the most podium finishers with nine. ATC is made up of Chilliwack/Agassiz/Abby and Mission residents.
