Chilliwack athletes excel in Spartan race

Two Chilliwackians emerged as winners in a large obstacle race event in California.

Chilliwack athletes Sharon Fast and Dale Cuthbertson won their respective age groups at the first Spartan Super Obstacle Race of 2014, held in Southern California.

Fast and Cuthbertson traversed a 15 kilometre obstacle-laden course, running up and down mountainous trails near Temecula.

More than 11,000 athletes competed in the Spartan Super event and shorter Spartan Sprint event (five-plus km).

Fast, 54 years old, bested nearly 800 women with a time of two hours and 20 minutes. Cuthbertson, 61 years old, finished in one hour and 57 minutes, topping more than 3,000 competitors in his division. Both athletes finished among the top six per cent in the entire field.

Both athletes train at Ascend Fitness Coaching in Sardis.

Spartan races are designed to test resilience, strength, stamina, quick decision making skills, and overall athleticism.
