BCHL skaters taking the next step

Five BCHL skaters are joining National Hockey League organizations after last weekend's NHL entry draft.

Jujhair Khaira was the first BCHLer off the board at the National Hockey League entry draft, going to the Edmonton Oilers in the third round (63rd overall).

The Cloverdale native was one of five BCHL skaters picked by NHL teams.

Powell River Kings goaltender Sean Maguire was next, selected in the fourth round (113th overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Merritt Centennials defenceman Reece Wilcox went in the fifth round (141st overall), drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers.

The New Jersey Devils went to the BCHL well in the fifth round, selecting Coquitlam Express forward Alex Kerfoot 150th overall.

The Vancouver Canucks took Victoria Grizzlies forward Wesley Myron in the sixth round (177th overall).

Maguire and Myron are both committed to Boston University for the 2012-13 season, and Khaira is committed to Michigan Tech.

Wilcox is committed to Cornell.

A BCHL graduate was also selected on the weekend.

Ex-Penticton Vee and current University of Denver skater Joey Laleggia was drafted by Edmonton in the fifth round (124rd overall).
