Pioneering rugby girls lead the way

Female rugby took a big step forward in Chilliwack this spring, with the introduction of a senior girls team at Sardis secondary school.

And now, Chilliwack’s Crusader Rugby Club is looking to take it a step farther.

The Crusaders hope to enter a U-18 girls team in the BC Rugby Union this fall, with the Sardis girls forming the nucleus.

There’s plenty of talent to build around.

The first-year Falcons went 5-2, with 215 points for and just 104 against.

Ashley Heisler led the team with 10 tries and Juliana Tuioti collected six.

Sierra Hunter kicked converts with help from Sarah Muxlow. Becky Sturm, Tori Kuhn, Makayla Duval, Tyra Phillips and Ashton Goldthorp were all strong performers.

“I’m proud of all the girls for the commitment and enthusiasm they showed throughout the season,” said coach Terry Puckey. “I believe they will be all the better for this experience and we hope to do it all over again next year.”

In related rugby news, the Crusaders are inviting all middle and high school players to Yarrow Sportsfield June 8 for the first ever Touch Rugby Festival.

The event is planned as a fundraiser, fuelling youth rugby development through the Chilliwack Rugby Society.
