Midget Thunderbirds limp into break

It has been a tough year so far for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the BC Major Midget Hockey League.

Formerly known as the Fraser Valley Bruins, this year’s squad includes four Chilliwack skaters in forwards Austin Wellsby and Kyle Westeringh, defenceman Kyle Hazelwood and goaltender Josh Matzek.

Heading into the Christmas break, the team sports a record of 4-18-2, good for ninth place in the 11 team league.

In their last two games before the break, the Thunderbirds faced the last place Thompson Blazers (3-19-2), dropping two on the road.

In Saturday’s opener, the Blazers opened up a three-goal first period lead and hung on for a 3-1 win.

The Thunderbirds got their only goal in the third period, with Mitch Biermann (Abbotsford) lighting the lamp.

The Sunday rematch was a shootout, with the Blazers taking an 8-5 final.

Hazelwood and Wellsby picked up assists on the second Fraser Valley goal, scored by Abbotsford’s Dylan Kooner.

Wellsby assisted on a Virtanen strike in the second period.

Fraser Valley returns to action Jan. 5-6 with back to back home games against the South Island Royals (7-12-5).

The first game will be played at Prospera Centre with a 2:15 p.m. puck drop.
