Cascades see Prairie's best and worst

The University of the Fraser Valley women's basketball team faced the best and worst of the Canada West Prairie division, earning a weekend split on the road.

The Cascades opened Friday with a game against the unbeaten University of Regina Cougars, the top ranked team in Canada.

UFV, the tenth ranked team, fought hard but fell 78-61.

The Cascades were within one point after three quarters, but the Cougars out-scored them by 16 in the fourth to pull away and improve their record to 12-0.

Chilliwack natives Nicole Wierks and Kayli Sartori led UFV with 14 points apiece, with Sarah Wierks (Chilliwack) pulling down a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Cascades got back to their winning ways Saturday night, blitzing the winless University of Brandon Bobcats (0-14) 60-35.

UFV held the home side to single digit scoring in all four quarters, including just four points in the second quarter.

The Cascades led by 11 after one quarter and saved their best for last, exploding for 25 fourth quarter points to put the game away.

Chilliwack's Courtney Bartel and Abbotsford's Celeste Dyck led UFV in scoring with 15 points each. Sartori led the Cascades with 10 total rebounds.

The locals improved their record to 10-4, good for second spot in the Canada West Pacific division.

UBC is first at 10-2.

UFV hosts the Trinity Western Spartans Saturday night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre. Tip off is at 5 p.m.
